God graciously gives us all kinds of things to enjoy. These things however, do not come with guarantees as to how long they’ll last. Only two things come with guaranteed duration: the love of God and eternity.
If there are no guarantees, then it means God can take stuff away any time as He sees fit, without prior notice, warning, or apology. God’s gifts are for us to enjoy and cherish, but not to get unreasonably attached to.
Included in the gifts He gives are: family, relationships, jobs, property, and ministry.
When He chooses to close the chapter on something, we need to let go, be thankful for the time we had it, and the joy and blessing we experienced. We need to always be ready to move on to the next chapter. Letting go will be easy if we learn to be more attached to the Giver (God), than to the gift.
The duration of the gift is not guaranteed, but the love of the Giver is guaranteed for now and throughout eternity. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers…nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 8:35, 38-39).
